“a blank space of the city”
trading card: 64 mm x 89 mm (28 sheets)
I wanted to document people who are in the filed of football in Taiwan.
Unlike other countries, football is still minor sport here but there are people who are trying
to develop it into bigger presence.
My project proposal was developed when I got to know that many Japanese and taiwanese
are working hard to share the knowledge and contribute to the development of soccer
cultures in taiwan. I interviewed the man in Taiwan who is the first person running a coat
dedicated to small football and its surroundings.
It is not easy for children in Taiwan to practice in a coat dedicated to football.
Instead, they usually practice at their school grounds and some margin area in parks.
I met a small kid who plays soccer for the first time at the soccer coat which is run by the
person I interviewed. No one gives attention to this soccer coat owner in Taiwan. But I
believe what he does is very valuable for the future of football here.
In order to evaluate him, I made a trading card of him for my project.
Also I made a series of trading cards of football coats around the world including his coat.
Ironically there are no one in those football coats in my art work.
Because basically coats are used mainly during weekend and evening of weekdays.
So often you can find football coats without anyone, which look like a “blank” in a city.
From the economical perspective, this blank is problematic so that many coat owners are
suffering from their business.
It’s not easy to just run football coats as it’s also difficult to continue as business.
So we cannot really say it is always good to have a lot of football coats.
