Banana is the second largest non-oil export product in Ecuador. The country is the leader in the international banana market, three out of ten bananas that are exported in the world come from Ecuador.

In 2017, the country exported 3 billion dollars in bananas. Production is concentrated in the coastal provinces of El Oro, Guayas and Los Ríos.

Banana production is a key sector in the Ecuadorian economy, it generates 2 million jobs. In addition, Ecuadorian banana exports represent 10% of the country’s total exports, being the second most exported item. The main buyers are the United States, the European Union, Japan and China.

Through a series of documentary videos, the CoopsDocs Audiovisual Cooperative, in partnership with the Institute of Ecuadorian Studies and the Trade Union Association of Agricultural and Banana Workers of Ecuador, makes visible the other side of the banana industry through testimonies and images that give account of the breach of obligations related to labor and environmental rights, as well as the right to free unionization of workers in the banana sector.
